Questions and answers on the subject of riding saddles

During my customer meetings and on-site appointments, I am very often asked questions on the right-fitting riding saddle or care instructions for the riding saddle. I have compiled a selection of these questions on our Tempel Pferdesport page.

The right saddle

How does a saddle test work?

In order to get a comprehensive impression of your wishes and ideas, we will welcome you in our shop or alternatively meet you at your stable. A pre-selection of possible saddle models is made together and then test ridden on your horse in all gaits. The selected saddle is then fitted to the documented measurements of your horse in our workshop.

Which manufacturers/brands do you distribute?

In principle, we advise and distribute independently of brands. Of course, manufacturers with exceptional quality, excellent fit, comprehensive service and good value for money stand out in my serviced clientele.

At what intervals should my saddle be checked?

Recommending an exact check-up rhythm depends on various factors. Give your horse a regular saddle check. Your horse deserves comfort and well-being when practising our sport.

Age, training circumstances, change of stable, illnesses or husbandry may affect the fit of your saddle.
For young, growing horses, we recommend shorter check intervals of 5-6 months. Once a year you should have your riding saddle checked for fit, safety and functionality.

Pay attention to your horse and watch it carefully.

What prices will I have to pay?

In order to make the pricing transparent for our customers, we charge according to the time and material used. We charge a flat-rate travel fee for out-of-town appointments.

Care instructions

Why should I care for my saddle regularly?

Leather is a natural product…only the right care makes it durable and hard-wearing. When riding, your saddle and leather accessories are subjected to a lot of wear and tear. Dust, sand, rain and sweat affect the condition of the leather and can wear out the material.

To keep your leather products in good condition and supple for a long time, they need to be cleaned regularly. Special focus should be placed on a few areas. There are particularly sensitive areas on the saddle and bridle which are subject to regular wear, e.g. on the lower saddle flap, the stirrup leathers, the saddle flaps under the buckles, saddle strings, etc.

Abrasion can cause leather to fade or the grain to be damaged. Therefore, we strongly recommend greasing the leather item after a thorough cleaning with recommended cleaning agents. Greasing nourishes the leather to the inside and polishes the surface.

Disciplines and applications

Is there one saddle for all horses?

No.

Every horse is an individual.

Bone structure, musculature, biomechanical movement processes are different and require a wide range and selection of different saddle trees, chamber widths, anatomically adaptable saddle panels to meet the needs of your horse.

Together we have the responsibility.

Should the lambskin pad be placed under the saddle or directly on the horse's back?

Medically tanned lambskins are moisture-balancing, antibacterial, odour-neutral, relaxing and stimulating blood circulation.

In order to benefit from the thermal properties in addition to the previously unsurpassed shock-absorbing effect, we recommend using the lambskin pad directly on the horse’s back when cleaned regularly for the benefit of your horse.
